What is a stile?
Stiles are the two vertical pieces that run the full height of a passage door, one on each side. They are the backbone of the frame. The hinges mount to one stile, the latch and handle go on the other, so stiles take most of the daily wear a door sees over its life.
Because they run top to bottom, stiles are the longest frame members in the door. When you order, they are usually the pieces driving your length dimension.
What is a rail?
Rails are the horizontal pieces that run between the two stiles. A standard passage door has at least two: a top rail, a bottom rail. The bottom rail is typically the widest of the bunch, since it carries the most stress and gives the door its planted, solid look.
Rails are shorter than stiles, but they do just as much work holding the frame square and tying everything together.
An easy way to remember it
Here is the trick that sticks: stiles stand tall, rails lie flat. Stiles are the vertical sides, rails are the horizontal rungs. If you can picture a ladder, the long side pieces are your stiles and the steps are your rails. Mix them up once and you will never forget the difference again, usually because the mistake costs you a board.
